Elizabeth Avedon

Elizabeth Avedon is an independent curator and photo consultant. Former Director of Photo-Eye Gallery, Santa Fe; Creative Director for Ralph Lauren Media and The Gere Foundation, Elizabeth has received recognition for her exhibition design and publishing projects, including Richard Avedon’s “In the American West” for the Amon Carter Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Art Institute of Chicago; and exhibitions for the Leica Gallery, New York; the Menil Collection, Houston, Texas; and for the Estate of Diane Arbus, among others. Elizabeth curated the 2019 exhibition, MYTH OF A WOMAN: Photographs by Agnieszka Sosnowska, for the National Museum of Iceland, Reykjavik.

Elizabeth is a juror for the 2019 Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture and was on the panel of jurors for the internationally renowned Prix Carmignac Fondation Photojournalism Award in Paris. She continues to participate as a reviewer in many international portfolio reviews including the New York Portfolio Reviews, sponsored by The New York Times Lens Blog; CENTER/Review Santa Fe; FilterPhoto Festival, Chicago; Photolucida, Portland; the Icelandic Photography Festival, Reykjavik, Iceland; and Landskrona FotoFestival Reviews in Sweden.

Ongoing contributor to The Eye of Photography, Elizabeth also wrote the introductory essays for “Vivian Maier: Self Portraits” (powerhouse); “Dornith Doherty: Archiving Eden” (Schilt); and Tom Chambers “Hearts and Bones: A Photomontage Retrospective” (Unicorn). She continues as an instructor in both the BFA Photography and Video and graduate Masters in Digital Photography programs at the School of Visual Arts, NY.  In 2017, Elizabeth received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Griffin Museum of Photography.
