German-born Ellen von Unwerth is without a doubt one of the most influential contemporary fashion photographers and also one of the most important female photographers of the past few decades. Her clients include the biggest names in the industry. Known for her unique style, and especially for her sense of feminine mystique, her work clearly distinguishes itself in a prevailingly male-dominated industry. This perspective is greatly appreciated by her fashion industry clientele, including: Dior, Azzedine Alaïa, Katharine Hamnett, Guess, Guerlain, Clinique, Revlon, Victoria’s Secret, Cacharel, Shiseido or Harpers Bazaar, Vanity Fair or Vogue.
It is thus only fitting that this year we have chosen the eighth issue of S Magazine to showcase her creations in the form of a narrative photo book. These are pictures that are only superficially trendy and à la mode, but are in fact more of a reflection of the ideas of a truly great photographer. It simply had to be done. The fact that the entire production was shot with the Leica S, which as a photographic tool undoubtedly influenced the visual language, is just as essential to the project as the fact that Ellen von Unwerth was given completely free rein. This is a unique opportunity and an unusual luxury, as commercial shoots are usually created according to the customers’ requests.
You should feel involved with these almost cinematic sequences in an unrestrained way – after all these images are undoubtedly beautiful.
Issue No. 8 of the S Magazine is available at newsagents and the LFI Shop as of September 20, 2016.
