The photographic meeting place on Broadway

The Leica Gallery has been run in partnership with Leica Camera since 1994 and is closely linked to the company. The gallery has become a leading location for both traditional and modern photojournalism in the New York gallery scene. The gallery is located in an historic building in Greenwich Village that is listed in the records of the American Institute of Architects. Since its foundation, the gallery has housed more than 90 exhibitions, including pictures by renowned photographers such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Ralph Gibson, Leonard Freed, Alex Webb, Erich Hartmann, and Karl Lagerfeld.

Current exhibition "Her Picture in a Frame" - William Albert Allard

While William Allard's current exhibition at Leica Gallery, Her Picture in a Frame, is a change in direction in that all the images are of women, the visualization still remains conceived within his brilliantly unique style of portraiture. Of this work, the photographer has commented:

"It's fair to say that over my 45-year career I have been known primarily for pictures of the masculine world... But I have probably most enjoyed photographing females. The feminine face seen either as a portrait or as one of the primary elements within a broader composition, has given me great personal and artistic satisfaction... Many of the images in this exhibit are what I consider ‘found' pictures, made serendipitously, as they occurred, without any request on my part, somewhere along the road somewhere in the world. It could be Paris, in a restaurant or backstage at a fashion show. Perhaps along a country road in Mississippi or maybe at a lake in northern Minnesota. It could be anywhere. It might be a picture made in a glance. There are pictures here, however, that I made of someone I'd seen somewhere and photographed specifically by request. When posing someone I don't always ask them to look at the camera; I ask them to look at me. I'm making the picture, not the camera. With that kind of portrait, like Sandrine Gataleta; Thiele Robinson; Kareena Kapoor; or the prostitutes in Brazil and Mexico, I want to feel some kind of connection between myself and the subject. My hope is to take that connection and make a picture that introduces the person in the photograph to the viewer-even if the viewer is in another country or language removed. So it's through me that you see them."
